Slovakia's water utilities' response to arriving refugees

Today, 23 March 2022, around 3.5 million people have left Ukraine. Another 6.5 million have been displaced within the country.

You can read here how water service providers are delivering drinking water and sanitation services in areas along the Ukrainian border and how they are assisting Ukrainian water utilities to continue to serve their consumers in the country.

In Slovakia, the East Slovakian Water Company operates along the entire border with Ukraine and at all border crossings between Slovakia and Ukraine.

To date, almost 250,000 refugees have come to Slovakia from Ukraine. Some remain in Slovakia after registration and some continue to the rest of Europe.

From the first day when refugees arrived in Slovakia, the East Slovakian Water Company provided drinking water in tanks at border crossings and at large-scale registration centres and provided three accommodation facilities for refugees. It also ensured the transport of refugees by their own bus.

More waves of people arriving in Slovakia will need help, and there will be more and more of them. These are civilians, mainly mothers with children as the men stay to defend their country. Many accommodation capacities are already full, but other options are still being sought to help refugees from Ukraine.
